Processing times vary from application to application and are at the sole discretion of the Russian Consulate.

Normal applications submitted in London and Edinburgh will take minimum 5 working days to get processed.
Next day applications can be collected on next working day during the passport collection timings.
For the citizens of Australia, Italy, France, The Netherlands, Turkmenistan and USA the visa processing time will take 10 to 14 calendar days (under normal circumstances) unless they have residence permit or long term work/student visa for the United Kingdom for a term exceeding 90 days.
For Indian Nationals who wish to apply - there is only URGENT service exist for all types of Russian Visa. However, please note that while applying for Private Family member of Russian Citizen visa it will take 5 working days to be processed.
For EU citizens applying for single or double entry visa with invitation letter containing Individual Tax Number (ИНН) visa processing time is 5 working days.
For EU citizens applying for multiple entries business or humanitarian visa with invitation letter containing Individual Tax Number (ИНН) visa processing time is 10 working days. Applicants should also have a single or double Russian visa in the last 1 year, without which they cannot apply for multiple entries.
For Applicants wishing to travel to some parts of North Caucasus visa processing time is up to 10 working days.
For Applicants wishing to apply for a visa providing official letter from British Foreign and Commonwealth Office instead of telex, visa processing time is up to 10 working days.
For Applicants applying for a visa with telex to visit British Embassy in Russia, visa processing time is 5 working days.

If application is submitted on Monday, under normal services, it would be ready for collection on the following Monday only.

Please note VFS is not involved in the process of assessment of visa applications, or their grant or refusal. The assessment of visa applications is carried out by the Russian Consulate, and the grant or refusal of Russian visas is at their sole discretion.

The processing times for visas are estimates only. These are based on information and experience of the Russian Consulates in Edinburgh and London.

The processing of your application is subject to the procedures and timescales of the Russian Consulates, over which we have no control.

Please note that the validity of visa will correspond to the dates specified in the invitation.

Postal Applications

Please note that you will need to sign for the envelope once delivered to you. For security reasons each passport will be sent in a separate envelope so please consider this when calculating the total amount for payment.

Processing time for postal applications takes longer due to the period they are in transit to and from Russia Visa Application Centre. Kindly add this period to the minimum 7 calendar days required to process the visa application once complete documents have been received. The complete process may take 8-10 working days. Due to this we do not recommend that you apply for an urgent service by post. Application once sent in post cannot be withdrawn unless there is an emergency for which documentary evidence shall be required. VFS Services UK Ltd, shall not bear responsibility for any delays in postal transit or loss in transit owing to third party involved.


The delivery time to some postcode areas would take up to 5 working days due to addresses being in rural and hard-to-reach places.. The complete process may take 12-15 working days. Postcode areas: HS, IV4 and above, KA27 – 28, KW, PA20 and above, PH20 and above, ZE and all ‘islands’.

Step 1
Only short-term visa applications are accepted at the VFS application centre. Holders of diplomatic and service passports intending to visit Russia on official Business will continue to apply in person at the Russian Embassy, London.

Step 2
Before applying, please ensure you are very clear on your ‘purpose of visit’ – do remember we are here to assist and help you through the entire visa application process but are not permitted to advise or guide you on choosing a visa category. Since our Work is primarily administrative in nature, we have no say on whether you will be granted a visa as this is entirely the prerogative of the Consulate / Embassy of Russia to decide on.

Please select type of the visa you are applying for to obtain the information on the requirements.

Step 5
Please check the requirements carefully and fill in an online application form which is available in the section ‘Visa Application Form’.

Step 6
You need to print out your visa application form and come to apply in person to the Visa Application Centre in London or Edinburgh. Please note that at the time of submission you need to have all the documents and visa fees specified for your nationality and type of visa you are applying for. You can also apply by post- in this case your complete visa application needs be sent to London only. However, if the purpose of your travel to the Russian Federation is employment, you need to apply for your visa in person at the Russian Visa Application Centre, Please see the section ‘All About your Visas’ for more detailed information.

Please ensure you check closure dates and read the security regulation notices before you visit the Visa Application Centre

Step 8
Please note that in order to collect your passport at the Visa Application Centre you will need to present the original receipt given to you during the submission which will be collected from you as a proof of delivery of your passport. Please make sure you have a copy of it if you require it for your records.

It is Applicant’s responsibility to check the validity of the visa issued to ensure that it covers the period of stay requested, the number or entries required, and that it is valid for the purpose of trip immediately after collection of your passport.
